A traffic marshal was run over by a chartered bus in Ambedkar Nagar

50-year-old woman fatally hit by a Blueline bus on route 581 at Sheikh Sarai

NEW DELHI: A 50-year-old traffic marshal was run over by a chartered bus allegedly coming from the wrong side on the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) corridor in Ambedkar Nagar here on Monday. In another accident at Sheikh Sarai in the same corridor, a 50-year-old woman was killed when a Blueline bus hit her.

According to the police, the first accident took place around 6 a.m. when Ram Sharan was on duty at the Pushp Vihar bus stand. His son-in-law Gajender, who was also on night duty as a traffic marshal on the same stretch, had come to meet him.

A resident of Sangam Vihar, Ram Sharan was standing on the lane divider when the bus rammed into the divider, crushing his chest. Ram Sharan fell on the road. It is alleged that the driver then reversed the vehicle and the victim came under the rear wheels.

His son-in-law rushed him to the trauma centre at All-India Institute of Medical Sciences where he was declared dead on arrival.

The police said a passer-by noted down the registration number of the bus and informed the Police Control Room. Preliminary investigations revealed that the bus belonged to an operator having his office at Sheikh Sarai. Subsequently the police contacted him and found that the vehicle was attached to a Gurgaon-based office.

A case of causing death due to rash and negligent driving has been registered and a hunt lunched for the driver.

In the second accident, 50-year-old Meva Devi was killed when the a Blueline bus plying on route 581 from Ambedkar Nagar to Central Secretariat hit her as she was crossing the road to reach a bus stand at Sheikh Sarai in the BRT corridor around 5-45 p.m., the police said. The driver fled after abandoning the vehicle. Meva, a resident of Deoli Gaon, was rushed to Modi Hospital where she was declared brought dead.

While the bus has been impounded and a hunt launched for the driver, the police are trying to find out how the vehicle was allowed in the stretch as Bluelines have been withdrawn from the corridor. A case of causing death due to rash and negligent driving has been registered at the Ambedkar Nagar police station.
