CAUSING HARM: Health officials collecting samples of mangoes following complaints that chemicals were being used to ripen the fruits in the city. — KOCHI: The Health Wing of the Kochi Corporation has started investigation into the complaints that mangoes are ripened in the city using chemicals. Samples of mangoes were collected from the wholesale shops in Ernakulam market and Palarivattom. The samples were collected by a team of Health officials led by Food Inspector E.N. Shine, according to a statement issued by the civic authorities. The collected samples were sent to the Regional Analytical Laboratory, Kakkanad, for chemical analysis. The inspections will continue in the coming days, the statement said.The mobile vigilance squad of the Health Department also collected samples of mangoes from the Ernakulam market. The officials also seized some samples of the chemical used to ripen fruits artificially, said K. Ajithkumar, Chief Food Inspector. The investigation team consisted of P.A. Aboobecker and R. Sidharthan. The collected samples will be sent for chemical analysis, said Mr. Ajithkumar.
