Land-filling project opposed

Staff Reporter

KOCHI: The move to award a contract for a land-filling project at the Brahmapuram plant site was postponed following opposition from the councillors.

The proposal was to carry out land-filling in the area where a compound wall was to be constructed for the plant. The estimate was finalised after negotiating with the contractor.

The notification inviting the tender was publicised in the notice board on a 24-hour notice, according to the agenda circulated among the councillors.

Many councillors including the UDF parliamentary party leader A.B. Sabu, N. Venugopal, C.K. Hamsakunju and V. J. Hycinth opposed the manner in which the agenda was moved in the council. They were also critical of the move to bypass the Standing Committees and the ‘unusual haste’ shown by the civic authorities in negotiating the work.

P. S. Viju of the CPI (M) said that the agenda should be passed considering the exigency of the work.
