Thiruvananthapuram
Thiruvananthapuram: The Trivandrum Social Service Society, an NGO under the Thiruvananthapuram Archdiocese, has taken up a participatory programme to improve the disaster preparedness of vulnerable communities in the coastal areas of the district. The programme will take off on Tuesday with the inauguration of a vigilance week. It will ensure the involvement of communities to minimise the impact of disasters. The community-based programme is part of a State-level project which was launched in 2006 by Caritas India, the official organisation of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of India (CBCI) for social development in the coastal region from Thrissur to Thiruvananthapuram and in Kuttanad. It involves awareness classes for vulnerable communities. Teams specialised in first aid, early warning, search and rescue, relief and rehabilitation, damage assessment, patrolling and counselling are to be set up at the local level. The project includes mock drills for disaster vigilance committees and ward-level planning. Minister for Law and Parliamentary Affairs M. Vijayakumar is scheduled to inaugurate the community-based disaster preparedness programme at a function to be held at Kannanthura here on Tuesday. V. Surendran Pillai, MLA, will preside over the function.
