Workshop on planned parenthood on May 31

Staff Reporter

BANGALORE: A unique endeavour that comprehensively packages all aspects of parenthood — from inception to conception to childbirth and post-natal childcare — is being undertaken by the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at St. John’s Medical College Hospital.

This workshop, held once in four months as an effort towards public health education, had been started keeping in mind the modern day scenario of working couples and nuclear families who undergo anxiety over the added responsibilities of childbirth and childcare.

A planned pregnancy with the aid of scientific knowledge could go a long way to help make the experience enjoyable, Rita Mhaskar, Head of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, told a press conference here.

The one-day workshop, “Parent Craft Workshop”, is designed to be a simple, audio-visual and interactive session that encourages complete participation from couples. It will start with demystifying the concepts and processes of pregnancy, followed by a view on diet for pregnant and lactating mothers. A physiotherapist will educate the couples about exercise during and after pregnancy. A panel on pre-conceptual care and contraception will be conducted. At the end of the workshop, participants will be given a guide to parent craft to be used as a ready reference at all times. This move will recognise the couples as a unit and will include the father in the processes of childbirth and care. The next workshop will be held at St. John’s Mini Auditorium, SJMCH on May 31. For details, contact Dr. Mhaskar on 9341232062.
