Kozhikode: Minister for Local Self-government Paloli Mohammed Kutty inaugurated a State-level get-together of Kudumbasree volunteers organised in connection with the 10th anniversary celebrations of the Kudumbasree Mission at the Corporation Stadium here on Tuesday.

At the inauguration, Mr. Mohammed Kutty stressed the need to strengthen the activities of the Kudumbasree Mission in order to counter the criticism faced by it. Kudumbasree units should prioritise their programmes to move forward in all their endeavours. They should focus on increasing production of milk, eggs, meat, fish, vegetables and rice so as to take on the retail giants, he said.

The three-tier local bodies had helped increase the participation of women in various programmes. Women could achieve better results than men in implementing schemes at the grassroots, Mr. Mohammed Kutty said.

He said unity and discipline among Kudumbasree volunteers were necessary so that they could intervene in issues concerning society. They had already achieved marvellous results in women empowerment and weeding out poverty from the State, he said.

The 10th anniversary celebrations saw the Kudumbasree Mission draw up plans for setting up retail shops and marketing strategies in grama panchayats and municipalities.

The Kudumbasree Mission organised various programmes in the past month to commemorate its 10th anniversary. Get-togethers, children’s meeting, cultural and sports competitions, poster exhibition, discussions at local level, seminars, and exhibition of products were held.

Cultural procession

A cultural procession was taken out on Tuesday in connection with the celebrations. Mayor M. Bhaskaran presided over the function. A. Pradeepkumar, MLA, inaugurated a comprehensive project of Kudumbasree, while P.M.A. Salam, MLA, felicitated representatives of different banks. K.K. Lathika, MLA, released the Kudumbasree souvenir. District panchayat president K.P. Kunhahamedkutty inaugurated the community marketing network scheme.

Thirty women were honoured for their contributions to various fields. They included Sugathakumari, poet; T. Devi, member of the State Women’s Commission; P.T. Usha, athlete; J. Lalithambika, bureaucrat; Nilambur Ayesha, theatreperson; Neena Prasad, dancer; K.P. Mariumma; Pamela Ann Mathews; R. Parvathy Devi; and Chelakkodan Ayesha.
