Letters to the Editor
This refers to the editorial “A glass half full” (May 20). Political astuteness, although a necessity for a stable government, was not what the people of Uttar Pradesh wanted from Ms Mayawati. The State has not progressed in the key areas of law and order, infrastructure, economic development and education. It is important for the country that U.P. does well in these priority sectors. The Centre and the State government should shed their one-upmanship and work together to ensure U.P.’s progress. J. Dhasaradhy, Philadelphia Ms Mayawati is busy spending taxpayers’ money on vacuous projects, wasting huge funds on erecting statues all over the State. It bears mentioning that her electoral triumph in 2007 was more due to non-performance, unprecedented corruption and a host of high-profile scandals that marked the Mulayam Singh regime than her so-called astute political instinct.
