Letters to the Editor
The article “Of loan waivers and tax waivers” (May 19) serves as an eye-opener on two counts. One, on the weightage CAG reports carry. Two, it exposes the scant respect officials have for the funds earmarked for a purpose, even if they are meant for the victims of the most serious agrarian crisis the country has faced and have been allocated by a person no less than the Prime Minister himself. M.S.R.A. Srihari, Khammam The apathy of politicians and bureaucrats is appalling. The excuse that there was not enough time to read the CAG report is unacceptable. Do not people often stay back late in their offices if pressing issues come up? Is it too much to expect the same from our elected representatives? Lives depend on what they do. What can be a more urgent issue than that of people continuing to commit suicide due to the wrong policies of the government? Suhas Karnik, Bangalore It is ridiculous on the part of the Maharashtra government to waive the entertainment tax for the Indian Premier League matches. The IPL teams are sponsored by the richest Indians. Tax concessions should be given only to those who really deserve it. That the tax waiver has been proposed in a State in which most farmers have been denied the benefits of the loan-waiver announced in the Union budget on the ground that the loans were from private persons or firms is ironical.
