Counting begins today for panchayat polls

Special Correspondent

KOLKATA: Counting of votes for the panchayat elections held in 17 districts of West Bengal begins on Wednesday.

Chairman of the Left Front Committee, Biman Bose, has requested leaders of the Left Front to advise their workers not to take out victory processions or engage in any celebrations till the zilla parishads are formed.

This is to avoid any further trouble stemming from political rivalry that has also taken a toll on relations between certain Left Front constituents in some places during the polls. “What has happened has happened. Enough is enough. We must strive to ensure there are no further disturbances,” Mr. Bose said here on Tuesday.

Sporadic incidents of violence had marred the three-phase polls in which several persons died in clashes between supporters of rival political parties. In one major incident, supporters of two Left Front constituents – the CPI(M) and the RSP — were involved.
