PERIAKULAM: Indian Overseas Bank (Chennai) and Indian Army (Delhi), with their second successive wins in the semifinal round-robin league, qualified for the title clash in the Jeppiaar College of Engineering 49th annual P.D. Chidambara Sourya Narayanan memorial Trophy all-India basketball tournament, organised by the Silver Jubilee Sports Club here. IOB outplayed Integral Coach Factory (Chennai) 100-54, while Indian Army scored a 75-65 win over CRPF (Jalandhar) after trailing 58-59 at the end of the third quarter. The results (semifinal league): IOB 100 (Ravikumar 18, Mathew 17) bt ICF 54 (Arul Venkatesh 14, Vinoth Kumar 12); Indian Army 75 (Jairam Jat 26, Arockia Babu 18) bt CRPF 65 (Ashfaq Ahmed 18). Nehru Youth advancesNehru Youth Football Club (Vikramasingapuram) entered the semifinals of the 32nd annual Vinodhkumar memorial Trophy State-level football tournament, defeating Nilgiris District XI 6-5, via sudden-death, at Sivakasi on Tuesday. At the end of regulation time, the teams were 2-2 and the teams scored three goals each in the tie-breaker. Kiruba and Michael scored for Nehru Youth, while Nirmal and Rajdeet were on target for Nilgiris during the regulation period. In the tie-breaker, Michael, Murugan and Mani were successful for Nehru Youth, while Rajdeet, Arul Daniel and Nandakumar scored for Nilgiris. In sudden-death, Rajesh succeeded for Nehru Youth but Nirmal missed for Nilgiris. Basketball tournamentThe 53rd all-India basketball tournament for the LRG Naidu Memorial Cup (men) and the third all-India basketball tournament for the KCP Indirani Memorial Cup (women), scheduled to begin at Karur on May 21, have been put off due to various reasons.
