Security measures in place in Hubli

1,200 police personnel

to be deployed

309 persons taken into preventive custody


HUBLI: As many as 1,200 police personnel, including 12 companies of Central Para Military Forces, will be deployed on duty in the four Assembly constituencies of Hubli-Dharwad on the day of elections on May 22.

Hubli-Dharwad Police Commissioner Narayan Nadamani told presspersons here on Tuesday that of the 589 polling booths in Hubli-Dharwad, 188 had been identified as critical booths and that additional police personnel would be deployed there.

The Commissionerate had given the responsibility of providing security in each Assembly constituency to an official of the rank of the Assistant Commissioner of Police. Deputy Commissioners D. Prakash and R. Dileep would be monitoring security arrangements in Hubli and Dharwad respectively, he said. There would be one mobile unit each under sub-inspector or assistant sub-inspector for every 10 polling booths in a constituency. There would be 52 mobile units in the twin cities under 32 sub-inspectors and 20 assistant sub-inspectors. They would be monitored by 18 police inspectors, he said.

Mr. Nadamani said that para military force personnel would be deployed at critical booths and around buildings where there were two or more polling booths.

There were 175 such areas in the twin cities, where wireless connectivity would be provided to the personnel on duty, he said. The Police Commissioner said that 728 licensed weapons had been deposited with the police in the wake of the elections. As a precautionary measure, preventive arrests of 309 persons had been made, he said. The police had taken stringent measures to check distribution of liquor and money. Checks would be intensified, Mr. Nadamani said.

To a query, Mr. Nadamani said that illicit liquor trade in Kamaripet area of Hubli had stopped following the stringent measures taken by the police. He announced a cash award of Rs. 10,000 to those who would provide information on any person indulging in such trade in Kamaripet.
