‘Ministers competing to breach code’

Special Correspondent

HYDERABAD: The Telugu Desam Party has alleged that Ministers, Congress MLAs and other leaders of the ruling party were competing among themselves to break the code of conduct for the byelections as many times as possible.

It was almost as if they were doing it with the intention of scoring as many marks they could and get into the good books of Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy. In fact, ever since the Congress came to power in the State, no election was held in what could be termed, a ‘free and fair’ manner, the party alleged.

Addressing a press conference here on Tuesday, Telugu Desam Parliamentary Party Leader K. Yerran Naidu appealed to people to take up the responsibility of protecting democracy from the ‘dictatorial’ policies of the Congress Government and ensure a free and fair bypoll.

Mr. Naidu said Agriculture Minister N. Raghuveera Reddy had received six notices from the Election Commission of India in four years during bypolls especially in Penukonda and Visakhapatnam, while other Ministers like Konathala Ramakrishna (Commercial Taxes), Jakkampudi Ramamohan Rao (Roads and Buildings) and former Union Minister of State T. Subbirami Reddy received notices during the Visakhapatnam bypoll.

An official of the rank of Chief Secretary was made to proffer a written apology to the Election Commission of India. Officials down the line in the districts were being coerced so much that they were behaving in a partisan manner.

The TDP leader alleged that that the Chief Minister was allowed to have a public meeting at 10.35 p.m. in Nizamabad district, while the Warangal district Collector would not even respond over phone when they called him to seek permission for TDP president N. Chandrababu Naidu’s roadshow.
