Insurance for fishermen before rains

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Minister for Fisheries and Registration S. Sarma said here on Tuesday that the proposed comprehensive insurance scheme for fishermen would be carried out before the monsoon this year.

Addressing a press conference in connection with the second anniversary of LDF government, the Minister said that insurance scheme would provide cover to fishing boats and equipment.

The government would provide 50 per cent of the premium.

The government would also extend low-interest loans (four to five percent) to the fishermen for purchase of fishing equipment.

Besides, fisherwomen selling fish would be given interest-free loans. In addition, about 1,000 micro units of fisherwomen would be started for taking up small projects.

The products manufactured by them would be marketed through 20 mini super markets to be set up in the nine coastal districts. The first of these would be inaugurated at Chirayinkizhu this month.

Mr. Sarma announced that the Harbour Engineering Department would start work on new fishing harbours and fish landing centres at Kasba and Cheruvathoor in Kasaragod district, Chettuva in Thrissur district, Arthungal and Chetthi in Alappuzha district and Chathanad and Kunjithai in Ernakulam district.

He said that the government was taking steps to end irregular land transactions. The proposed amendments to the laws would enable the Registration Department to cancel registrations using fabricated documents. The department had already prepared the draft of the law, making registration of land sale deeds mandatory. Citizens’ charters would be published in all offices under the Registration Department next month.

An aqua technology park, he said, was under construction at Aluva for production and export of ornamental fish. Satellite farms, homestead farms and backyard hatcheries will be set up in different parts of the State under the project.

The project will generate 5,000 direct employment opportunities and 10,000 indirect employment opportunities.
