New regional organisation for maritime security
Special Correspondent
NEW DELHI: A new organisation dedicated to port and maritime security in the Indian Ocean and bringing together India and Pakistan was inaugurated on Tuesday in the Maldives, said a United States Coast Guard news release here.
The South Asia Regional Port Security Cooperative (SARPSCO) initiative brings together Bangladesh, Comoros, Madagascar, the Maldives, Mauritius, Oman and Sri Lanka, besides India and Pakistan.
“If crimes such as illegal fishing, human smuggling and the transportation of illegal cargoes and drugs cannot be collectively combated, then neither can terrorism and piracy,” said U.S. Coast Guard’s Rear Admiral Craig Bone in his keynote address.
