TAMBARAM: A section of residents of Kamarajapuram near Pammal has been attempting to “take over” government land classified as ‘hill poramboke’ for the past two days.
This, despite officials of the Kancheepuram district administration telling them that they were not entitled to ownership of the land.
For the past two days, the residents, mostly workers at the quarries that dot Tiruneermalai area, said they have been working in the quarries for four decades now and were deprived of housing benefits. The government could allot a piece of land near the abandoned stone quarries to each of the few hundred families living in Kamarajapuram, they said.
Officials of the Revenue Department said the land they tried to take over was government property and housing sites could be granted only after an official notification. The officials said their petitions would be forwarded to the Kancheepuram Collectorate and a final decision taken later.
