‘Out of 3,068 houses in the village, only 721 have toilets’

METTUR: Collector N. Mathivanan called for active participation of elected representatives of local bodies and people in the efforts to achieve total sanitation in all the villages in the district.

Mass contact programme

Speaking at the mass contact programme held in Savuriyur village in Mettur taluk on Wednesday, the Collector pointed out that sanitation was very important for the overall development of villages. Only a few villages in the district had received the Central Governments Nirmal Purashkar Award for achieving total sanitation.

All the villages should initiate efforts to achieve total sanitation.

Financial assistance

Out of 3,068 houses in the village, only 721 were having toilets, he pointed out and asked the villagers to come forward to construct individual toilets.

The Government was providing financial assistance under the Total Sanitation Campaign to construct toilets.

The district administration would construct public toilets in places, where individual toilets could not be built, he added.

Employment

Explaining the National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme to the participants, Mr. Mathivanan said that persons aged above 18 years could volunteer for manual work under the scheme. They should express their willingness to the respective panchayat president.

Livelihood security

The scheme was aimed at enhancing the livelihood security of households in rural areas by providing at least 100 days of guaranteed wage employment in every financial year to every household.

Migration

The scheme also aims to minimise the migration of people from the rural areas to urban parts in search of employment and empower the rural poor.

The government is implementing the scheme in the district from April 1 this year.

The Collector promised to sanction funds for construction of compound wall for a school in the area.

Steps would be initiated to open a primary health centre in the village. He distributed welfare assistance to the tune of Rs. 2.41 lakh to 82 persons. District Rural Development Agency Project officer D. Jagannathan and senior officials spoke.
