This Day That Age
The eleven-day old Lebanese crisis on May 20 took a turn for the worse with the Anglo-American and Russian naval vessels heading towards the Mediterranean to stand by for an emergency. According to latest reports available in Cairo, British and American naval forces with equipment for amphibious landing are now within 200 miles off the Lebanese coast while the Russian naval units are reported to be speeding out from their Baltic, Black Sea and Albanian bases towards the Eastern Mediterranean. The situation appeared “ominous” in view of the Anglo-American declaration that they would rush military help to the pro-Western Lebanese government of President Chamoun and the Russian counter-warning that any interference by outside sources in the internal affairs would threaten peace in the Middle East.
