Letters to the Editor
The article “A mockery of science, conservation and environmental laws” (May 19) should serve as an eye-opener to our politicians. But as the saying goes, it is possible to awaken a person who is asleep, not one who pretends to be so. When conservation of natural resources ought to be the first priority of the state, one wonders what prompted the UPA government to give the go-ahead to the Sethusamudram Ship Channel Project, casting aside experts’ opinions on its adverse impact. Evidently, our leaders are more concerned about their political interests than the long-term welfare of the country. R. Ponnarassi, Vellore It appears that the SSCP is based on documents that are misleading. The question of faith need not have been entangled in the politicised imbroglio. The unacceptable levels of the massive environmental damage the project is bound to cause should have been enough to shelve it. R. Swarnalatha, Coimbatore The only debate that hitherto dominated the media and the judiciary was on the religious aspect of the project. It convinced me that we should implement the SSCP. But the excellent article on the environmental implications published in The Hindu has made me oppose it. C.G. Senthilkumar, Sunnyvale The Sethusamudram project has led to an ego clash between its proponents and opponents. Even before the issue reached the present state of acrimonious war of words, experts raised doubts over its economic benefits and warned of the damage it would cause to the ecology. The religious aspect became prominent as it involved the faith of millions. At least now, the government should rethink the issue and desist from proceeding further with the project. T.R. Anandan, Coimbatore
