A bundle of joy: A doctor verifying the weight of an infant at the healthy baby contest in Tiruchi on Wednesday. — TIRUCHI: The joy of parents of a ten-month-old kid knew no bounds on Wednesday, when the infant, R. Sowmiyanarayanan of Mylapore in Chennai, won the first prize in the ‘Healthy Baby Show’ contest, organised by the Rajiv Gandhi Trust in the city. The kid stood out in several aspects to secure the first prize at the competition, at which toddlers, brought by their enthusiastic parents, participated for the top honours. CareWeighing 9.5 kg, the winning baby had been given proper post-natal care - through breast-feeding and nutritional diet from the ninth month onwards, according to Ramkumar, its father. The family had come to their native place Srirangam to spend the summer vacation and took the opportunity to enter the little child in the contest, and were well rewarded. Happy“We are doubly happy that our son got the first prize,” the parents observed. The second prize in the competition went to Darshan of Tiruchi, the third to V. Keerthana and L. Vyshali got the consolation prize. The healthy baby contest formed part of observance of the Rajiv Gandhi’s death anniversary. Norms such as continued breast-feeding for the first six months since birth; nutritional food from the seventh month; assessment of weight and hygiene of the babies particularly dental health were taken into consideration for the selection of the winners, according to Trust secretary V. M. Gnanavelu. A couple of doctors R. Selvam and V.Ram Shankar co-ordinated the selection of the best kids based on these parameters. Correspondent of R.C. Educational Institutes R. Manoharan, who inaugurated the contest, said that it would create awareness among the masses about the post-natal care of their new-borns. More interesting was a presentation by S. Natarajan, Marketing Executive of Johnson and Johnson, which sponsored the programme. Using a compact disc, he explained the simple techniques for baby care and the ‘massage’ for the new-borns.
