LoC firing: Army lodges protest
Luv Puri
Mendhar: The Army on Wednesday lodged a strong protest with Pakistan against Monday’s firing on an Indian post in which a soldier was killed.
The protest comes a day after the Indian and Pakistani Foreign Secretaries asserted in Islamabad that both countries were committed to maintaining the sanctity of the ceasefire along the Line of Control, operational since November 2003.
A 30-minute flag meeting was held at the Roshni Post. The Indian Army was represented by Colonel Manish Kumar, commanding officer of 2/8 Gorkha Rifles, and the Pakistan Army, by Colonel S. Malik. The formal protest note handed over to the Pakistani officers contained details of the 10-minute firing on the Dhip post in Mendhar. Rocket-propelled grenade launchers and under barrel grenade launchers were also used.
The sector-level commanders meetings along the LoC is part of the confidence building measures agreed upon. Earlier, such meetings were restricted to the international border.
