With a mission to serve the masses

Staff Reporter

KOCHI: When Shiyas A. started working as an officer-in-charge at the wireless monitoring station at Gorakhpur, Uttar Pradesh, three years ago, he never thought of appearing for the Union Public Service Commission’s civil service examination.

After graduating from the College of Engineering, Thiruvananthapuram, he had joined the Indian Engineering Service.

A resident of Thammanam, Mr. Shiyas appeared and cleared (222nd rank) the examination this year.

Life in Gorakhpur

“The pathetic condition of life in Gorakhpur made me realise that there is so much to be done in this country. It inspired me to prepare for the civil services examination,” said Mr. Shiyas, who belongs to a family of police officers.

For Mr. Shiyas, leaving Kerala for Gorakhpur was a cultural shock.

“The condition was bad, be it education, culture or infrastructure. This motivated me to take up this career,” he said.

Mr. Shiyas says he may be selected to the Indian Administrative Service, as 28 out of 111 vacancies reported are for candidates from Other Backward Communities.
