Doctor arrested

ALAPPUZHA: A doctor attached to the orthopaedic wing of the Alappuzha General Hospital was arrested by the Vigilance and Anti-Corruption sleuths on charges of accepting bribe.

According to officials, the doctor, E.C. Babukutty, was nabbed while accepting a bribe of Rs.3,000 from one Suresh, a native of Vallikunnu in Mavelikkara.

Suresh had undergone treatment under the doctor and one of his fingers was amputated two years back. He had approached Dr. Babukutty for a disability certificate. However, the doctor allegedly demanded Rs.5,000 for issuing the certificate and settled for Rs.3,000 finally.

Suresh complained to the Vigilance and on Thursday, a team led by Deputy Superintendent of Police (Vigilance) V. Suresh Kumar, caught the doctor while allegedly accepting Rs.3,000 from Suresh. A case has been registered and the accused will be produced in the Vigilance Court, Thiruvananthapuram, on Friday.—Staff Reporter
