SBI job aspirants face problems online

Staff Reporter

BHUBANESWAR: Saroj Kumar Sahoo, a post-graduate student from Utkal University, is neither an avid surfer nor a keen observer of stock market, but yet he has been spending most of his time in cyber cafes here for the past five days. Similar is the case with Chinmaya Kumar Jena, who has also been making regular rounds to cyber cafes in different localities.

They have been struggling hard to apply online for clerical jobs, advertised by State Bank of India (SBI). Hundreds of students are now making a beeline for the internet café as uploading application form is not an easy task due to technical difficulties. SBI is seeking applications for 20,000 clerical posts across the country.

Long queues

“I went to an SBI counter, stood in long queue and secure a journal number by depositing Rs. 250. But when I came for uploading my application online by putting the number, the two website addresses given by SBI were not working properly,” says Mr. Saroj. He says: “while first two pages opened without any difficulty, the process failed when I reached the last page.”

During the first half of Thursday, the applicants hopped from one cafe to another, but there was no improvement in the situation.

“In initial days, filling of application forms was not a difficult task. But as days passed, the problem started cropping up. On an average 50 applicants have been returning everyday without being able to post their resumes,” Sanjay Sahu, operator of Vnet cyber café,” he says. The local SBI officials acknowledged that there were some complaints. “The websites have been updated. There was some problem during last three days, but it has been rectified,” SBI’s Assistant General Manager (Human Resource) Ashok Patnaik says. The websites might be getting slowed down as more than 5 lakh applicants have been logging on to two sites at one go. “Whatever the situation, the SBI has decided to provide all applicants with duplicate admit card. A copy of the registration ID and password will be sent to respective email accounts,” Mr. Patnaik says. Meanwhile, coaching centres offering courses on bank examinations in the city have been getting good number of students in view of such huge vacancies.
