Governor describes her feat as an honour and pride for not only womenfolk but also the whole State BHUBANESWAR: A day after 38-year-old lady Kalpana Dash became the first Oriya to scale the Mount Everest peak congratulatory messages started pouring in for the lawyer from Dhenkanal district on Thursday. Ms. Dash, who led the Indian expedition, conquered world’s highest peak of 8,848 metre, at about 11.30 am on Wednesday. Describing her feat as an honour and pride for not only womenfolk but also for whole State, Governor Murlidhar Chandrakant Bhandare said the success of Kalpana Dash proved that sheer willpower would surely lead to success one day. Her outstanding achievement had put her into the illustrious company of woman climbers of world’s highest peak and her success signified that the strength of womanpower would be a source of inspiration for innumerable women in the State to strive for excellence in their respective field, Mr. Bhandare said. Pat from NaveenChief Minister Naveen Patnaik also congratulated the mountaineer on her unique feat saying her feat would inspire others in the State. Kalpana Das had earlier tried to scale the peak twice but she was unsuccessful. Ms. Das had made her maiden attempt in the year 2004. She had climbed up to 7300 metres but had to withdraw due to extreme freezing condition. Two year later, she repeated her attempt but hostile weather forced her drop the plan. This year, she started the expedition on April 13.
