There is more to magic than meets the eye

There are aspects to the age-old entertainment form of magic tricks that help develop skills, especially in children.

Learning simple tricks using playing cards or producing handkerchiefs from an empty basket help the young in more ways than one, say organisers of a workshop on magic for children being conducted here. The Kozhikode-based Magic World has been conducti ng a two-week-long summer magic workshop for children at Kandamkulam from May 12.

Honing skills

“Through mastering simple magic feats, the children basically develop the skill of presenting themselves before an audience. Through the sessions organised at the workshop, the participants are better oriented in communicative skills,” says Pradeep Hudino, director, Magic World.

As many as 16 children between eight and 15 years of age are participating in the workshop comprising teaching modules designed to help improve their overall personality.

‘Ganitha mandrikam,’ for instance, would hone their mathematical skills. Another session attempted to generate a scientific temper while yet another dealt with puzzles. ‘Oorakudukkil’ helped the child improve his or her ability to solve difficult problems one faced in life. In another session, the participants tried their hands in assembling available objects in different patterns in an attempt to make the best of any given situation, with the available resources.

Mr. Hudino says more than the teaching aspect, emphasis is on the initiative that is inbuilt in the participants.

The children at the workshop also got an opportunity to witness magic tricks by A.S. Medha during her ‘arangettam’ on Tuesday.

Thirteen-year-old Medha performed half a dozen feats during her 30-minute performance to prove her skill. Medha had undergone six months of training at the Magic World.
