Prisoners discharged

PUDUCHERRY: Twelve inmates of the Central Prison, who were admitted to the Indira Gandhi Government General Hospital and Postgraduate Institute (IGGGH & PI) here following unrest in the jail on May 22, were discharged on Friday.

The prisoners raised a protest over the alleged harassment meted out to their relatives when they visited the jail. Some of the prisoners observed a fast following which eight prisoners were admitted to the GH after they became medically weak. Another four prisoners “attempted to commit suicide” by consuming soap nut powder, prison sources said. — Staff Reporter
