PUDUCHERRY: The Department of Vascular and Endovascular Surgery of Pondicherry Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) has performed a leg artery thrombolysis surgery on a newborn. The hospital, in a release, said a five-day-old newborn was brought to the hospital on April 23 with bluish lifeless left leg from below the thigh due to lack of blood flow to the limb. The child was referred from Chidamabaram. Head of the department Ashley Solomon and his team assessed the child along with paediatricians and radiologists. The problem was due to a blood clot in the main blood vessel supplying to the leg, the release said. Though the condition was seen in adult patients, the department had not received a young child with this problem. During surgery, a catheter was passed through the artery to the site of the blood clot. A medicine was injected into the clot to dissolve it. The baby was recovering in the hospital and would be discharged soon, the release said.
