THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The United Democratic Front (UDF) on Friday picketed the Secretariat to highlight the alleged indifference shown by the State government in tackling the food crisis in the State. Inaugurating the protest, Opposition leader Oommen Chandy said that despite a directive from the Central government to constitute a State-level food security scheme, the government was yet to do so. “Instead of fighting over the chairmanship of the proposed scheme with coalition partners, the government should set apart separate funds for the scheme,” he said. The Opposition leader added that the Central government had already included the paddy fields in the Palakkad region under the Central Government Food Security Scheme. Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee president Ramesh Chennithala was of the view that the State government had lost its moral right to be in power. “People have lost their faith in this government,” he said. Kerala Congress (M) leader K.M. Mani cautioned Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan against diverting funds allocated for the panchayats for the proposed food security scheme.
