Vigilance committees to be formed to monitor scanning centres

Staff Reporter

A series of awareness programmes on registration of marriages planned

PUDUKOTTAI: The Tamil Nadu State Commission for Women will set up district-level vigilance committees to monitor the functioning of scanning centres in the State to check abortion of foetus.

The Chairperson of the Commission, K.M. Ramathal, told the media here on Friday that the committees would ensure proper correlation between the number of pregnant women scanned in each scanning centre and the new-borns. The details of pregnant women would be compiled from the field staff such as village health nurses and health workers. Any inconsistency would be brought to the attention of the Commission.

Ms. Ramathal said a committee had already been constituted in Chennai and similar district-level committees would be formed shortly. The declaration of the Commission as a statutory body has helped in initiating action on women-related issues.

Ms. Ramathal said as many as 50 out of total 480 cases pending before various courts had been settled. The Commission had also sorted out 1,500 out of the total 2,000 petitions received during its sittings in parts of the State.

The Commission would organise a series of awareness programmes on registration of marriages, she said. A total of 500 marriages, solemnised recently, would be registered at a function to be held in Coimbatore on June 13. College-level counselling units would also be established to create awareness among girl students about their rights and personal security, Ms. Ramathal added.
