Interim injunction against gas agency
Staff Reporter
CHENNAI: The Madras High Court has restrained Indra Indane Service of Puducherry from classifying a private college as a commercial establishment for the purpose of supply of LPG cooking gas to the college hostel pending disposal of a writ petition.
Justice K. Venkatraman granted the interim injunction, which also sought to direct the gas agency to release 14.2 kg cylinders of gas under exempted category.
The petitioner institution, Dr. Pauls Engineering College of Vanur Taluq in Villupuram district, run by a non-profit registered charitable trust, has been receiving 70 cylinders from 1999, each weighing 14.2 kg, on a monthly quota under the exempted category.
However, in January 2008, the gas agency, which sought details of the college, said that since the college had submitted only the recognition certificate, the cooking gas could be supplied under commercial category, the petitioner said.
