BANGALORE: The counting of votes will go hi-tech this time in Karnataka as the State is set to use a web-based technology to aid the process of counting.

The new technology will enable computerised counting, computing and also transmission of the data to the Election Commission from the counting centres.

Addressing a press conference here Friday, Bangalore Urban district Deputy Commissioner M.A. Sadiq, who is also Returning Officer for the district, said the software was also being used in the district which comprises seven Assembly constituencies. The software “Genesys,” supported by the National Informatics Centre, will facilitate online counting.

Procedure

Mr. Sadiq said with the help of the new software, it might be possible to know the results of the seven constituencies in the Bangalore Urban district by 12.30 p.m. itself. However, there were several stringent and detailed procedures to be followed this time with respect to counting. An official from the Union Government will have to record the total votes polled in every round of counting and also that by each of the candidate. Later, he has to submit it to the poll observer for cross-verification.

Counting centres

Of the seven Assembly constituencies of the district, counting of votes for Mahadevapura, Yelahanka, Dasarahalli and Byatarayanapura will be taken up in the Bangalore University Visvesvaraya College of Engineering near K. R. Cirlce, while that for Yeshwanthpur, Bangalore South and Anekal will be taken up at the Government Arts College. A total of 1,800 electronic voting machines have been used for polling in these seven constituencies.

In all, 300 persons will be involved in the counting of votes for the seven constituencies in addition to about 1,000 police personnel who will provide security, he noted.

Of these seven constituencies, Dasarahalli has registered the lowest voter turnout of 43.89 per cent while Yelahanka has registered highest voter turnout of 60.85 per cent. The average voter turnout for these seven constituencies is 52.12 per cent.

Prohibitory orders

Mr. Sadiq said prohibitory orders will be clamped by the Bangalore city police commissioner on Sunday in the area within the radius of two km from the counting centres to prevent any untoward incidents.

Similarly, the sale of liquor has also been prohibited on the day of counting.
