THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan will launch the ‘Nammude Maram’ (Our Tree) campaign for Plus Two and college students on the Kariyavattom University campus on June 5, the World Environment Day. Forest Minister Benoy Viswom and Education Minister M.A. Baby told reporters here on Friday that social forestry programme being launched by the Forest and Education Departments as a follow-up to the ‘Ente Maram’ campaign initiated in schools all over the State last year, would cover all government, aided and self-financing colleges, technical educational institutions, VHSE and higher secondary schools. The Ministers addressed a meeting of student leaders, university union office-bearers and officials on Friday to work out the details of the drive. As a prelude to the drive, teachers, students and officials of Forest and Agriculture Departments would conduct a survey to study the texture of soil and identify the saplings that could be planted in each locale. 10 lakh saplingsNo foreign species like acacia will be planted as part of the drive. It has been proposed to plant 10 lakh saplings this year. Multi-level coordination committees headed by Vice-Chancellors and principals would be formed for monitoring the campaign. Literary competitions and seminars would be held as part of the campaign. Awards would be given for the university and college for outstanding performance, they said.
