CHANDIGARH: Haryana Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda said on Friday that his government had contributed more than 52 lakh metric tonnes of wheat to the Central pool, which was 55 per cent more than the previous year. Extending his greetings to the farmers of the State, he said this had become possible due to their persistent hard work in contributing to the country’s food security. Mr. Hooda said that under the guidance of Congress president Sonia Gandhi the UPA Government headed by Manmohan Singh had announced the minimum support prices for wheat and other rabi crops before the sowing of the crops. This was the only reason that keeping in view the good prices, the farmers decided to produce more wheat, he asserted. Mr. Hooda recalled that he had made a commitment to Union Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar that the State would contribute 50 lakh metric tonnes of wheat for the Central pool. It was a matter of pride for the State that the target and commitment had been fulfilled. He said Haryana so far had contributed 52.01 lakh metric tonnes of wheat and the wheat arrivals in the State’s mandis amounted to 52.74 lakh metric tonnes. Last year Haryana had contributed 33.50 lakh metric tonnes wheat for the Central pool, he added.
