LUCKNOW: In a sudden change of guard in Uttar Pradesh’s administrative hierarchy, Industrial Development Commissioner and Infrastructure Commissioner Atul Kumar Gupta took over as the new Chief Secretary of the state on Friday. He replaces Prashant Kumar Mishra, who has taken voluntary retirement from service.

A 1972 batch IAS officer, Mr. Mishra was due to retire on August 31 this year.

Besides appointing Mr. Gupta as the new Chief Secretary, the Mayawati Government also affected some other important administrative changes.

Principal Secretary (Finance) V.K. Sharma has been appointed the new Agriculture Production Commissioner, replacing Rakesh Kumar Mittal, who takes over as Social Welfare Commissioner.

Mr. Mittal was holding the additional charge of APC.

Anup Mishra, who returns from deputation to the Government of India, will be the Principal Secretary, Finance.

Mr. Gupta belongs to the 1974 batch of the IAS.

Mr. Mishra is the third senior IAS officer of the State to take voluntary retirement from service in the Mayawati regime after former Chairman of the Uttar Pradesh Board of Revenue, Neera Yadav, and Manjulika Gautam.

Ms. Yadav of the 1971 batch had opted for voluntary retirement in March this year, while Ms. Gautam who is from the 1972 batch took VRS recently.

She has joined the Central Administrative Tribunal (CAT) as vice-chairperson.

Administrative post

Mr. Mishra became the Chief Secretary a few days after the formation of the Mayawati Government in May last year.

He was on deputation to the Centre before he was asked to take over the top administrative post in the State.
