HASSAN: Deputy Commissioner of Excise B.S. Hyderali Khan on Friday said that 19 people had died in the district after consuming spurious liquor in the past two years. This figure excludes the four deaths that took place on Friday Speaking to presspersons here, Mr. Khan said that compensation had been paid to families of all the 19 victims. According to Mr. Khan, to prevent the sale and manufacture of illicit liquor, the Excise Department along with the police has raided various locations in the district and a close watch is being kept on all licensed bars and liquor shops. He said that some locations in Sakleshpur and Belur taluks were also raided following complaints that spurious liquor was being manufactured there. Mr. Khan said 69 people had been arrested and 306 cases registered in the district this year. Around 1 lakh litres of spurious liquor and 6,830 litres of jaggery wash were destroyed. The department had also seized 15,460 litres of beer, 60,000 litres of toddy and five vehicles, he added.
