THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Education Minister M.A. Baby has underscored the need for changing the present system under which minimum marks are compulsory for each subject from classes I to X. Inaugurating a management workshop organised by the SIEMAT for Deputy Directors, DIET Principals and district project officers here on Thursday, he said some students were not able to make progress in certain subjects. But, they excelled in some other subjects. The progress of these students should not be blocked by invoking minimum marks. He said if there was any need to change the present mode of teaching and examinations, the demand for it should come from society. The Minister called for a debate on the issue. He said the proposal to set up committees to assess the ability to teach was under active consideration. Such an exercise by committees consisting of representatives of teachers’ organisations and academic experts would help improve the quality of general education. He called for speeding up the declaration of citizens’ charter by educational offices from the level of AEO offices. The list of educational institutions functioning illegally should be published locally. Similarly, details of recognised institutions, sanctioned courses available in them and the number of seats should be published. The local bodies should take the initiative to expose illegal institutions.
