dated May 24, 1958: Lebanese crisis

The Lebanese cabinet decided to complain to the United Nations Security Council against the United Arab Republic for its alleged interference in the country’s internal affairs, a cabinet source said in Beirut on May 22. A cable had been sent to Dr. Karim Askoulin, Lebanon’s permanent representative at the United Nations in New York, to lodge the complaint. The decision to go to the Security Council reflects Lebanese anxiety over alleged incursion by armed insurgents, weapons and ammunition into the country from Syria.
