UPA scorecard

By far, the UPA government has done well though it faces flak from its alliance partners everyday. The economist Prime Minister has indeed kept his distance from politicians. Mr. P. Chidambaram has also done well thanks to the best and persistent efforts of RBI Governor. Price rise is the issue the Opposition may bank on in the next elections.

The Central government’s performance is certainly above average reviewed in the context of the inadequate support by the participants and parties supporting it from outside. Outstanding is the turnaround by the Railways. The Rakesh Mohan Committee pointed out a few years ago that the Railways would become a white elephant by 2015. The UPA government has proved the prediction wrong. Implementation of the National Rural Employment Guarantee Programme will bring about more inclusiveness in growth in rural India.

The slow and unsteady UPA has lost the race in many States. Instead of combating terrorism, it is negotiating the release of terrorists. Rather than eliminating corruption and eradicating poverty it is waiving farmers’ loans.

T.S. Gopalakrishnan,
