Letters to the Editor
Union Home Minister Shivraj Patil’s observations on the Afzal Guru - Sarabjit Singh issues are unfortunate. If this reflects the official government policy, then all investigations into the terrorist attacks during the last few years, including the Hyderabad blast and the recent Jaipur explosions, should be given up. There should be no arrests, even if the culprits are caught, and there should not be prosecution cases in courts, thereby saving valuable time, effort, and money. The various security agencies can be asked to confine themselves to providing security only to VVIPs and VIPs. K.Venkata Rao, Secunderabad Mr. Patil’s apprehensions are unwarranted and untimely. Already, the purported confession of Kashmir Singh on reaching the Indian soil that he was in fact spying for cast a shadow on Sarabjit’s case. When no one raised a parallel between Afzal Guru and Sarabjit Singh even in Pakistan, Mr. Patil’s utterances show the politics of appeasement at the cost of national interest. The Interior Minister in Pakistan’s caretaker government while pleading for Sarabjit Singh’s case on the grounds of mistaken identity, never sought a quid pro quo of this magnitude. Ushadevi Suddapalli & S.B. Rao, Muscat, Oman
