Kumbabhishekam performed
Special Correspondent
CHENNAI: Thousands of devotees participated in the kumbabhishekam of the seven-tier Rajagopuram of Sri Marundheeswarar Temple at Tiruvanmiyur here on Friday.
Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments Minister KR. Periakaruppan, Department Secretary G. Santhanam, Commissioner T. Pitchandi, Mayor M.Subramanian and Pollachi Mahalingam were among those who participated in the function.
Appeal
Though the construction of the Rajagopuram on the eastern side of temple was started 45 years ago, it could not be completed for various reasons.
Following appeals from the devotees, the Government issued orders for completing the Rajagopuram. The construction work, started in July last year, was completed at the cost of Rs 45 lakh.
Apart from the Rajagopuram work, Rs one crore had been spent for improving infrastructure at the temple, which included construction of additional compound wall, Annadanakudam, office complex and amenities for devotees.
The 1,300-year-old temple is one of 32 famous temples in this region.
Saint poets Tirugnanasambandar and Tirunavukarasar had sung songs on the greatness of deities in the temple.
