Corrections and clarifications

* * The heading of a report (Some editions – Tamil Nadu/Karnataka, May 23, 2008, page 3) was “Mango vendors having a free rein”. It should have been “a free run”. (The report was on artificially ripened mangoes.)

* * The caption of a standalone photograph (Kerala, May 23, 2008, page 3) was “Wings of fire: All Smiles: Project Director of Agni II advanced version, Tessy Thomas, being felicitated by K.S. Manoj, MP, at a civic reception organised in Alappuzha on Thursday. C.S. Sujatha, MP, and K.C. Venugopal, MLA, are also seen”, leading to a query.

The detail is right. As reported on May 14, 2008, Tessy Thomas will be the first woman scientist to head a crucial DRDO project, to upgrade the 2000-km range Agni II missile that can also carry warheads. She was involved in the launch of Agni-III as associate project director.

* * In a report “Legal framework vital to tackle terrorism, says CJI” (May 18, 2008), the second paragraph was incomplete. It was “Speaking on ‘arbitration and international standards for contract law and legal aspects of terrorism,’ here, the CJI said, ‘several acts that have occurred in the past few years, particularly the attacks on the Parliament, Akshardham temple, Indian Institute of Science, serial bomb blasts in Mumbai and Malegaon, massacre of labourers in Upper Assam and most recently the multiple bombings in Jaipur.’”

It should have been “Speaking on ‘arbitration and international standards for contract law and legal aspects of terrorism,’ the CJI [K.G. Balakrishnan] said, ‘several acts that have occurred in the past few years, particularly the attacks on the Parliament, Akshardham temple, Indian Institute of Science, serial bomb blasts in Mumbai and Malegaon, massacre of labourers in Upper Assam and most recently the multiple bombings in Jaipur, demonstrate that the entire length and breadth of the nation is vulnerable.’”
