PAYYANNUR: Governor R.L. Bhatia has called for rejuvenating khadi and village industries activities through strategic interventions as envisaged in the Scheme Fund for Regeneration of Traditional Industries Scheme. Speaking after laying the foundation stone for the Golden Jubilee Building of the Payyannur Khadi Centre here on Friday, the Governor said that concerted efforts on the part of the khadi and village industries and the Kerala Khadi and Village Industries Board (KKVIB) could make traditional industries more competitive, productive and profitable. Many schemesComplimenting the Payyannur Khadi Centre, which had been established by erstwhile Madras government and later transferred to the KKVIB, for its schemes for employment generation by extending financial assistance to entrepreneurs, the Governor said that the schemes enabled the rural entrepreneurs to manage and run units by themselves. Low-interest loansIt was commendable that the KKVIB had so far financed more than 26,000 units, he said and lauded another scheme for providing grant and loan to cooperative societies and charitable institutions at nominal rates of interest. Mr. Bhatia said that Gandhiji’s words that India lived in its villages should still be inspiring the spirit of patriotism and national resurgence. He hoped that the new golden jubilee building of the Payyannur Khadi Centre would give further impetus to the activities of the KKVIB. Industries Minister Elamaram Karim, who is also chairman of the KKVIB, presided over the function.
