Myanmar opens up to global aid

NAYPYITAW (MYANMAR): U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said the junta agreed on Friday to allow “all aid workers” into the country to help cyclone survivors.

Mr. Ban’s comments came after a crucial two-hour meeting with the junta leader, Senior General Than Shwe. Asked if he thought the agreement was a breakthrough, Mr. Ban said: “I think so.”

An U.N. official said Gen. Shwe also gave the green light for foreigners to work in the Irrawaddy Delta. “The General said he saw no reason why that should not happen as long as they were genuine humanitarian workers and it was clear what they were going to do,” he said. — AP
