Thiruvananthapuram dominates; 10 records set

THIRUVANANTHAPRUAM: Ten new records were set as Thiruvananthapuram’s swimmers dominated the proceedings on the opening day of the State Junior and sub-junior aquatic championships at the Water Works Swimming Pool here on Friday.

Seven of the 10 records came in the boys’ section with J. Siji (Thiruvananthapuram) and R. Rahul (Thiruvananthapuram) hogging the limelight for breaking two of the oldest records.

Siji broke A. Ramesan’s 10-year-old record in 200m buttefly in boys’ Group I category. Siji clocked 2:24.44 seconds to better Ramesan’s mark (2:24.66) set in 1998.

Rahul set the pool on fire in the 200m butterfly in boys’ Group II category by clocking 2:29.50s and erase Ramesan’s (2:34.77) mark set in 1997.

In girls’ section, Esha Reddy of Ernakulam broke G. Gayathri’s six-year-old record in 50m backstroke in girls’ Group IV category. Esha clocked 42.15 to sink Gayathri’s mark of 47.33 set in 2001.

At the end of first day’s competition, Thiruvananthapuram (509 points) had opened up a huge lead over Ernakulam (245) and Thrissur (107).
