Six struck dead by lightning in south Orissa

BERHAMPUR: At least six persons were struck dead by lightning in Ganjam and Gajapati districts of south Orissa on Friday evening. Khetra Jani and Dhoba Jani were killed when lightning struck them at Khasua village under Sandhamula panchayat of Beguniapada block of Ganjam district. At the Sahaspur village of Sanakhemundi block of the district the victims of lightning were Balaji Patra and Sarat Behera.

At the Sikalkhandi village of Chatrapur block lightning killed S. Mangama Swami and injured another. Several persons were also injured by lightning during the period including one at Gopalpur beach resort. In Gajapati district a person was killed at Chitrakar street of Paralakhemundi when lighting stuck him in the evening.

Reports of another person getting killed by lightning in Nayagarh district on Friday afternoon also came up. During last few weeks of this summer lightning during thunder storms became major killer in Orissa.

On Thursday, lightning killed four persons and injured 26 in Sundergarh district.

On May 12 five children died and four others sustained injuries at Taputikra village of Sundergarh district while they were playing under a tree. Reports of stray deaths by lightning were coming up from parts of the State regularly during past two weeks. It may be noted that four persons were killed in Balasore district on May 18 when a wall fell on them during a thunderstorm.

The thunderstorm accompanied by heavy rain completely disrupted the sewerage system of the city.
