NEW DELHI: Urging the citizens to utilise the online system for depositing their property tax, Mayor Arti Mehra on Friday said that the Municipal Corporation of Delhi has collected over Rs.1,000 crore in property tax for the year 2007-2008. Ms. Mehra said the civic body had collected an “all-time high” gross amount of Rs.1007.06 crore as property tax. “For the first time action has been initiated for recovery of amounts against dishonoured cheques thereby bridging the gap between the gross collection and actual realisation. The good collection is chiefly due to discontinuation of defaulting Citizen Service Bureaus (CSB) after discrepancies were found in their tax collection. The CSBs had also failed to assess the amount collected online,” she added. While pointing out that the online method of collecting property tax had proved beneficial to the MCD, Ms. Mehra said: “During 2006-07, the total collection of property tax was Rs.800.68 crore, while the actual amount realised was only Rs.711.48 crore, a gap of Rs.89.20 crore. During 2005-06, the total collection was Rs. 794.43 crore while the amount realised was Rs.715.54 crore and the amount in dishonoured cheques was Rs.11.36 crore.” The Mayor appealed to the property tax payers to make payments through the online system as far as possible. “This will further help us in tallying the figures of total collection of property tax and its actual realisation. It will also discourage the taxpayers who pay property tax through cheques which get dishonoured,” she added.
