44 arrested in hooch tragedy

BANGALORE: With no fresh cases related to the hooch tragedy being reported on Friday in and around Bangalore, the State police have decided to wrap up individual cases and launch a comprehensive investigation into the tragedy.

The police have so far arrested 44 persons in different parts of the State in connection with the tragedy. According to police, 127 people have so far died after consuming the killer brew. Of them, 64 were in Bangalore City, 38 in Bangalore Urban District, and 25 in Kolar district.

Director-General and Inspector-General of Police R. Srikumar told The Hindu that the comprehensive investigation was being taken up to find out whether there was any conspiracy behind the incidents. Additional Director-General of Police (Law and Order) Shankar M. Bidari would coordinate and review the investigation related to 77 cases registered in Bangalore, Bangalore Rural, Kolar and KGF districts.

Bangalore Rural Police have transferred the case of unnatural death of brewer Mushtaq of Kattigenahalli to Kolar police as the death occurred in Malur taluk, according to Superintendent of Police Vikash Kumar Vikash. The names of the arrested vendors in Bangalore City were given as Deva alias Devaraj polish worker; Raja, polish worker; Palani, fish merchant; Ayaz, Soundar, Sathya, wife of Soundar and Rekha alias Byramma, daughter-in-law of Soundar (all from D.J. Halli) ; Neelakantappa, Fraser Town and Raghu, Gandhinagar, K.G. Halli. Amjad, Munirathna, Ramesh Muniswamy alias Appaga and Yallappa (all from Adigarakallahalli, Anekal Taluk); Pujari Venkataswamy, Gonigattapura village, Anekal Taluk; Sunandamma and Nanjamma from Ambedkar Colony, Attibele Town; Kaveramma, Adigondanahalli; Thayamma, Harenoor, Anekal taluk; Nagesha; Nagaraju, Ashoka and Munireddy from Thirumagondanahalli; Syed Mehaboob and Ajmal Pasha from Bylanarasapura, Hoskote taluk and Raghu from Gonigattapura. The police have arrested Sardar alias Sabjan of Adigarkalahalli.

Narasipura; Srinivas, Tekal; Narayanappa alias Mindapallyappa, Narasapura; Kanthamma, Narasapura; Narayanappa, Narasapura; Srinivas, Tekal; Venkatesh, Kalahastipura and Imran, K.G. Halli. The accused who died after drinking the liquor are: Fairoz, Muslim Colony, DJ Hallil; Kumar, Roshan Nagar; (brother-in-law of accused Soundar); Selva, Indirapur, D.J. Halli; Anbu, Sahadab Nagar, D.J. Halli; Rani, D.J. Halli; Kolandai Raju alias Vinoda, D.J. Halli; Manjunath, Narasapura and B. Muniyappa, Tekal.
