BERHAMPUR: The syndicate of the Berhampur University decided to completely revamp the configuration of management of different post-graduate departments of the university. The syndicate of the university decided to follow the ‘school system’ being used by high ranking universities of the country at a meeting held on Thursday. According to the Post Graduate Council Chairman of the university, Bauribandhu Kar, the change is being brought in accordance to the norms of the University Grants Commission to promote interdisciplinary exchange of knowledge. Seven schoolsIt was felt that this change would increase the quality of education in the Berhampur university. The university would have seven different schools. They would be Schools for Life Science, Physical Science, Social Science, Management Studies, Ocean Science, Electronic Sciences & Computer Application and Llanguage Different related departments of the university would be put under a single school. The School of Life Science would have departments of zoology, botany, biotechnology, environmental science under it. The School of Physical Science would have mathematics, physics and chemistry departments. History, political science, economics, mass communication, home science, women studies law would be under the School of Social Science. School of Management Studies would have commerce and management courses under it. The syndicate has envisioned making School of Ocean Science to be the thrust area of the university. It would have oceanography, marine biology, geo-physics and marine microbiology. This new configuration of departments under different schools would promote higher grade research due to interdisciplinary relationship between related subjects.
