IN PROGRESS: The toll plaza coming up at Perungudi in Chennai, as seen on Friday. CHENNAI: A 10-lane toll plaza has been proposed for Perungudi, according to officials of the Tamil Nadu Road Development Company. Detailing the status of the Rajiv Gandhi Salai from the Madhya Kailash junction to Siruseri, official sources told The Hindu that the planned toll plaza would have features such as a three-tier tolling system — to accept cash, a smart card, and a sensor-readable pre-paid on-board unit (OBU) system. This system could be fixed behind the rear-view mirror of vehicles, allowing them to go past the toll plaza without having to stop. While two-wheelers would not be tolled as was being practised on the existing toll plaza on the East Coast Road at Uthandi, sources said a one-way toll of Rs.17 had been proposed to be collected for a four-wheeler which passes the Perungudi toll plaza on the IT corridor. Work on the Rs.300-crore main carriageway of the 20.1-km stretch of the Information Technology (IT) corridor has been completed. Other works such as medians, high-mast lamps and signage would be completed by July, the sources said. The shifting work of utility services on the service road, creation of ducts and footpath would take some more time. The TNRDC is also planning to construct 12 more foot overbridges for the entire 20.1-km IT corridor in addition to the already constructed 3 foot overbridges in the milestone-1 of the IT expressway. The TNRDC is also currently engaged in a survey of all residents covering 9 villages on the IT corridor and also the residents of Perungudi to make available local resident permits, facilitating them to travel toll-free back and forth on the IT corridor. A smart card will be provided once the local resident survey is completed by the TNRDC after verifying either the passport of the resident, or the voters’ photo identity card or the ration card. The process of land acquisition for the second phase of the 25-km extension work from Siruseri to Mamallapuram has also commenced. The Rs.250 crore project work would have two bye-passes — one in Tiruporur and the other at Kelambakkam.
