VIJAYAWADA: Andhra Pradesh Urban Finance and Infrastructure Development Corporation (APUFIDC) Managing Director Praveen Prakash on Friday asked the officials of the Vijayawada Municipal Corporation (VMC) monitoring the works taken up under Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM), to ensure their high quality and early completion.

Accompanied by Municipal Commissioner P.S. Pradyumna and other officials of the quality control wing of the VMC, Mr. Prakash on Friday inspected works under progress and assessed their quality.

He also enquired with the officials, contractors and local residents about the causes for delay in their completion.

Boon

Speaking to reporters, he said JNNURM was a boon for development of urban areas and municipal corporations must make the best of it.

Referring to the proposed Bus Rapid Transit System (BRTS), he said it must be implemented in cities like Vijayawada and Visakhapatnam on the lines of how it was done in Indore.

Pointing out that Vijayawada was sanctioned development works worth Rs. 1,000 crores, he recalled that when he was the Commissioner of the Vijayawada Municipal Corporation (VMC), the annual budget for implementation of developmental works had never crossed Rs. 60 crores to Rs. 70 crores. Although JNNURM was being implemented on a large scale, the officials must ensure their high quality and early completion.

Additional funds

Mr. Prakash said additional funds could be secured under the scheme only after completing the on-going works and said he would inspect the works at regular intervals.

He inspected the underground drainage works in Veterinary Colony, construction of sump cum pump house in Film Colony, storm water drainage works on Eluru Road, construction of outfall drain on the removed railway track at Satyanarayanapuram, construction of G+3 houses for the poor at Radha Nagar and Vambay Colony and the 10 MGD plant at Head Water Works.
